Sitting Too Much? Going to the Gym May Not Help

According to Reuters, a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine has found that exercising regularly does not help overcome the risks associated with too much sitting. In 47 previous studies that were analyzed, the most sedentary people had a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, ovarian cancer and cardiovascular disease than those who spent less time sitting down. While the pattern was seen more for people who reported minimal exercise, the authors found that prolonged sitting was independently associated with a myriad of illnesses. Doctors suggest standing for a few minutes every hour, or during commercial breaks in order to increase the amount of time spent on one’s feet.
