Should Nurse Practitioners Have the Same Duties and Pay as Doctors?

As an estimated 25 million people will soon gain health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, “Nurse practitioners argue they can fill some of those needs if they are granted greater scope of practice.” However, an article in Kaiser Health News reports that a recent study found doctors and nurse practitioners have very conflicting views on the role nurses should have. The two groups agreed that nurse practitioners “should be able to practice to the full extent of their schooling and training,” but only 17% of doctors believed they should be able to lead medical homes and less than 4% of doctors believed they should receive the same pay as doctors for providing the same services.
