Rising Hospital Consolidation Trend Raises Concern

A new article in The New York Times discusses the rapid evolution of the healthcare system in Boise, Idaho where the recent consolidation of physician practices by the city’s largest hospital, St. Luke’s Health System, has been met with noted frustration. Independent doctors in the region, accustomed to an agenda of “freely referring patients to the specialists or hospitals of their choice and exchanging information about the latest medical treatments” are critical of St. Luke’s power to dictate “which tests and procedures to perform, how much to charge and which patients to admit.”
