Provider Statement

This continuing medical education activity is provided by Vindico Medical Education.

Support Statement

This activity is supported by an educational grant from Merck & Co., Inc.

Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue leading to reduced bone strength and a consequent increase in fracture risk. All fractures take their toll. They almost always produce pain when they first occur and produce at least a temporary impact on quality of life. Hip fractures threaten independence in the majority of individuals and are associated with a mortality of up to 20% during the year after the fracture. Identifying and treating patients who should be treated, as well as the availability of newer therapeutic agents, have the potential to significantly improve the lives of people with osteoporosis.

Target Audience

The intended audience for the activities is endocrinologists, internal medicine physicians, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with osteoporosis.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of these educational activities, participants should be better able to:

  • Outline the mechanisms of action of currently available and emerging resorption inhibitors, anabolic agents, and other therapeutic options for osteoporosis.
  • Assess screening and diagnostic modalities that allow for the prompt management of osteoporosis.
