On Which Daily Habit Are We Wasting Our Money?

About 50% of adults take a multivitamin every day but a new editorial column in Annals of Internal Medicine quotes physicians in saying that people may actually be wasting their money on these supplements, The New York Times reports. The authors claim that “for healthy Americans worried about chronic disease, there’s no clear benefit to taking vitamin and mineral pills. And in some instances, they may even cause harm.” Though sales for vitamins reached $30 billion in 2011, “whether regular long-term use can prevent heart disease and cancer has never been clearly established.” Officials from the Natural Products Association view the editorial as an attack on an industry helping people to achieve a healthier lifestyle.
