NY Governor to Allow Dispensation of Medical Marijuana

The New York Times reports that New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo, is expected to announce Wednesday an executive order that will allow for the dispensation of medical marijuana at 20 hospitals across the state. “The plan bypasses the State Legislature, which has failed to pass a medical marijuana bill, but it leaves much to be determined, such as which patients would qualify and which hospitals would be chosen as dispensaries.” The plan will invoke a 1980 law allowing research of medical marijuana for “life-threatening or sense-threatening” illnesses. Officials say that while they do not want marijuana to be use for “run-of-the-mill” cases, it may be approved for non-life-threatening illnesses such as non-terminal cancer or pediatric illnesses.
