Newly Released Psychiatrists’ ‘Bible’ Sparks Controversy

This weekend, the American Psychiatric Association released its new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, called the DSM-5. A post in NPR’s Shots blog explains “The DSM has taken on biblical proportions over the years because its list of several hundred disorders is often used to decide whether a particular behavior is abnormal and insurance will cover a problem.” However, the authors and many health experts argue that the DSM-5 is not a bible, but more of a dictionary. And though the DSM has sparked criticism, one expert explains “The DSM is a synthesis of the best knowledge at this moment in time.”
