According to CBS News, a report published by the Harvard Medical School suggests that simply owning and taking care of a dog can have significant health benefits, both mental and physical, for the entire family. Previous research has shown that dog owners are more likely to lose weight, have lower blood pressure and a healthy BMI. Additionally, they are more likely to get the doctor recommended two and a half hours of weekly exercise. Furthermore, owning a dog can reduce loneliness, stress, anxiety and depression, since looking into the dog’s eyes and petting the dog helps the owner release oxytocin, the love hormone. For those looking to become more active, owning a dog is a good way to get out of the house and into a daily walking routine.
