“Holding It” Bad for Health

A Chicago-based company is being rebuked for its stringent bathroom break policies, permitting employees a mere six minutes a day to take care of their “business” outside the office, an article published by CBS News reports. According to the CDC, 33 million Americans have overactive bladder, a condition which makes a person have frequent urges to go to the bathroom, in addition to the 50 percent of Americans over age 65 with diagnosed incontinence. Urologist Dr. Benjamin Brucker of the NYU Langone Medical Center describes the effects of “holding it,” which increases a person’s risk for urinary stagnation and urinary tract infections.
