Reuters reports on evidence published in Neurology that suggests that exercising as a young adult may be linked to better memory and cognitive function in middle age. Researchers tested physical fitness in 1985 by timing how long individuals could run of the treadmill at their max speed. 25 years later, researchers tested memory, reaction speed and mental control using a series of tests. Results showed that fitness at the younger age was linked to memory, reaction speed and mental control. These findings, compared with others that link lower blood pressure and blood sugar in teen years to quicker memory and learning skills in middle age, show the importance of physical exercise for maintaining mental health.
