Fighting Fire With Fire: Killing Cancer With Polio

A recent 60 Minutes episode reports cutting edge research being conducted at Duke University in an effort to find a new way to kill cancer cells. The polio virus is remembered by many as a plague which left millions paralyzed until the development of a vaccine in the 1950s. Phase 1 trials being conducted at the university are injecting a modified form of the virus directly into brain tumors, and while it is too early to say how effective the treatment will be in a wider population, they have seen some extraordinary results. So far, two patients in the trial are cancer-free three years post-treatment, and researchers are optimistic about the future of this treatment.
