FDA Approves New AbbVie Parkinson’s Drug

According to Reuters, AbbVie Inc. has won FDA approval for a new Parkinson’s disease treatment three months ahead of schedule. Duopa, a combination of carbidopa and levodopa, has been shown to be effective for 16 hours after a single dose, compared to the four hours that existing medications have been effective. The drug is administered via a portable fusion pump which delivers the medication straight into the small intestine. Until now, oral levodopa has been the leading treatment, but its short half-life limits the effectiveness of a single dose, and multiple doses can lead to dyskinesia.
