Deaths from Accidental Overdose of Narcotic Painkillers Soars

The number of deaths resulting from accidental overdoses of narcotic painkillers soared from 3,000 in 1999 to 12,000 in 2011 , according to an article published by CBS News. Deaths resulting from overdoses of drugs like morphine, hydrocodone and oxycodone jumped from 1.4 per 100,000 people to 5.4 per 100,000 over the 12-year period. The data also revealed that benzodiazepines were particularly concerning, accounting for 31 percent of the deaths, including a six-fold increase in deaths among adults ages 55 to 64.
