Can Alcohol Addiction Be Treated Through Moderation?

According to an article published by CBS News, moderation may be a viable solution to treating addiction in the 90% of Americans who struggle with addiction and receive no treatment. In an effort to provide alternative options for recovery, Dr. Adi Jaffe, Clinical Director of Alternatives Treatment Center in Los Angeles created a program centered on moderation management for treating alcoholism. The program begins with a one month period of abstinence, after which successful participants are allowed moderate drinking privileges. While traditional abstinence programs may be effective, Dr. Jaffe points out that these rigorous regimens often discourage addicts from enrolling, and 40 to 60 percent of those who do receive treatment for addiction will relapse.
