California Governor Expands Abortion Rights

The New York Times reports that California seems to have “gone against political tide” and has expanded abortion rights. California, along with several other US states, previously allowed non-physicians, such as nurses and midwives to terminate pregnancies using drugs. Governor Jerry Brown of California has now expanded abortion access, signing a bill allowing nurse practitioners, midwives, and physician assistants to perform aspiration abortions that use tubes and suction to remove the fetus. The bill is significant for “California is the only state this year to have expanded access to the procedure, whereas “68 restrictions on abortion have been passed by states so far this year.”
