Brain Surgery Meets Virtual Reality

According to CBS News, new technology being introduced today at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons meeting involves virtual reality headsets for neurosurgeons. Developed by the UCLA chairman of neurosurgery and the CEO of Surgical Theater, the technology allows a surgeon to explore the inside of a patient’s brain and see everything from brain tissue to nerves and blood vessels all with simple head movements. This VR device would allow surgeons to practice before they cut as well as put the headset back on during the procedure to reorient themselves during tricky surgeries. This innovation can ultimately benefit patients by making surgeries quicker, more efficient and overall more successful.
