Bioengineered Teeth from Adult Human Gingival Epithelial Cells

A new study in Journal of Dental Research demonstrates the bioengineering of teeth from isolated adult human gingival tissue. Researchers show that “cells can be isolated from adult human gingival tissue that can be expanded in vitro and, when combined with mouse embryonic tooth mesenchyme cells, form teeth.” The resulting teeth are human in origin and have roots, dentin and enamel just as human teeth do.
