Back Pain Relief from Physical Therapy Less Risky than Surgery

According to an article in Reuters Health, patients suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis, a common precursor to lower back pain and nerve damage, might be able to achieve the same level of relief from physical therapy as they might from surgery. Citing a study from the Annals of Internal Medicine, the article goes on to say that back surgery is a riskier proposition for these patients, with about 15 percent experiencing complications where “half of those are life-threatening.” For this study, researchers followed 87 surgery patients and 82 physical therapy participants, average ages 67 and 70, respectively. Controlling for other factors, the data showed “similar reduction in pain and other symptoms at two years.”
