Adiós Antibiotics: Researchers Announce New Approach to Treating Bacterial Infections

According to CBS News, researchers have developed a new approach to treating bacterial infections that does not include antibiotics. A study published in Nature Biotechnology describes the novel treatment, which utilizes engineered artificial nanoparticles called liposomes to act as decoys for bacterial toxins, isolating and neutralizing them. “We have made an irresistible bait for bacterial toxins,” said Eduard Babiychuk, author of the study. While the study has not yet been conducted on humans, it did prove effective in treating mice with sepsis, leading researchers to believe that it may serve as the new gold standard in treating bacterial infections.
