Will Smartphones Soon Be Able to Screen Newborns for Jaundice?

According to a Reuters article, a new smartphone app may soon provide parents with a way to screen newborns for jaundice. The BiliCam is designed to allow parents to monitor newborns’ health at home through the camera and flash features, taking pictures of the baby through a color calibrator placed on the baby’s chest. New data from testing of the BiliCam software reveals results similar to those gathered during blood testing of babies’ bilirubin levels, which is currently the best method for diagnosing jaundice in newborns.
