Researchers began by turning human stem cells into insulin-producing beta cells, and transferring the engineered cells into diabetic mice. After six months of healthy functioning in the cells, the mice no longer needed insulin injections, as their blood sugar remained steady and controlled. Though the study showed success in mice, trials in humans are likely several years away, said Douglas Melton, co-author of the study.
