Why Does Marijuana Use Make You Hungry?

According to CBS News, a new study published in the journal Nature has discovered the reason smoking marijuana causes users to suddenly crave food. Researchers found that the intense food cravings are actually caused by the neurons in the brain that are known to suppress appetite. The study, conducted on mice, discovered that marijuana activates pro-opiomelanocortin neurons known to curb hunger, essentially reversing the function of the neurons. More investigation is needed to determine how cannabis is capable of altering the neuron function, but this research can lead to the creation of drugs to increase appetite in patients with conditions such as cancer or AIDS.
