John Kenny, MD, Assistant Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, co-author of Psychiatry Test Preparation and Review Manual (Elsevier 2013), discusses a new study (published in the American Journal of Psychiatry) that followed a large group of patients, some of whom had schizophrenia and many of whom did not. Dr. Kenny reveals there is significantly increased morbidity and mortality in patients with schizophrenia, and he explains that these increases are in illnesses not directly related to schizophrenia, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Dr. Kenny discusses potential causes of this increased morbidity and mortality in schizophrenia patients.
