WHO Reports 7 Million Deaths Due to Pollution

According to a new World Health Organization (WHO) report, “Air pollution kills about 7 million people a year and is linked to 1 in 8 deaths worldwide,” the Los Angeles Times reports. The WHO says that the most recent report nearly doubles previous estimates. Additionally, the count of 7 million includes both indoor and outdoor pollution. “The higher mortality estimates are the result of new research showing a stronger link between exposure to polluted air and cardiovascular disease, cancer and respiratory illness, the WHO said.” The WHO has even named air pollution a human carcinogen with the potential to increase risk of lung and bladder cancer.
