Weight-Loss Surgery May Help Cure Diabetes For Up to 15 Years

A new study published in JAMA has shown that weight-loss surgery, including gastric bypass, banding, and stapling surgeries, may help type 2 diabetes patients stay in remission for up to 15 years, an article in Bloomberg Businessweek reports. Researchers compared diabetic patients who underwent weight-loss surgery to diabetic patients who did not. They found that at a 2 year followup, 72.3% of diabetic patients who underwent the surgery were in remission compared to 16.4% of patients who did not receive the surgery. At a 15 year followup, though the number of people in both groups who were in remission decreased, remission rates for patients who underwent surgery were still significantly higher than those who did not undergo surgery.
