Virtual Reality Could Bolster Weight Loss

A new study in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology shows that “virtual reality and other avatar-based technologies are potential methods for demonstrating and modeling weight loss behaviors.” Researchers surveyed 128 individuals and found that 88.3% said they would participate “in a program that used an avatar to help practice weight loss skills in a virtual environment.” The second phase of the study tested the usability of such an avatar, and found that all 8 test subjects said “they would recommend the program and that it influenced their diet/exercise behavior.” After the 4-week trial, average weight loss was 1.6 kg (with a standard deviation of 1.7).
