This Psychoactive Chemical Isn’t Just for Hippies

Outlawed for decades and labeled a Schedule 1 drug, psilocybin, the active component in magic mushrooms may now be considered as a treatment for depression, New York Times article says. A study published by The Journal of the Royal Society Interface showed the difference in participants whose brains had been injected with psilocybin. Researchers believe that these connections may be responsible for the strange synesthetic experiences described by people who take the drug, and might be effective in temporarily altering the way the brain behaves to treat psychological disorders such as depression.
