The Link Between Painkillers, Abuse, and Accidental Death

According to The New York Times, patients who are prescribed narcotic painkillers are using them for too long. A study revealed that nearly half of people who took painkillers for more than one month continued to do so three years later, and that 60 percent of patients taking painkillers for chronic conditions were also being prescribed other drugs that could spark adverse reactions. Furthermore, overdoses involving prescription drugs are one of the leading causes of accidental death in the US, accounting for about 70 percent of all unintentional deaths.
