The Effectiveness of Statin Drugs in Female Patients

With ongoing debates over the effectiveness of statin drugs for women, Reuters reports a study published in The Lancet which found that statin drugs do reduce heart risk factors as effectively for females as for males. The analysis included data on more than 174,000 patients, and measured the reduction in bad cholesterol levels during one year on statin drugs such as Lipitor, Zocor and Crestor. The reduction levels proved to be identical for both men and women. This provides valuable information to clinicians treating female patients that they can apply the same considerations in prescribing statin medications as they do for males.
