There hasn’t been an official verdict on the value of specialty hospitals, but proponents of these facilities recently attained more evidence to support their case. A recent report shows that specialty hospitals in three markets have not done financial harm to their general hospital counterparts. Opponents point to academic research that shows physician-owned hospitals put stress on community hospitals because the specialty hospitals select the most desirable patients.
