Stem Cell Scientist’s Research Deemed Non-credible by Panel

BBC News reports on an investigation into the research of stem cell scientist, Dr. Haruko Obokata, on the basis of “irregularities in data and images used in Dr. Obokata’s scientific papers published in Nature.” Dr. Obokata claimed to have been able to produce stem cells using an acid bath or mechanical stress. Her work offered hope of the possibility of a source of stem cells without ethical questioning. The investigation found that “one of Dr. Obokata’s articles reused images related to her doctoral dissertation, which was based on different experiments” and which destroyed the credibility of her data. Still, Dr. Obokata explains that she would soon challenge the panel’s findings.
