Schizophrenia in Humans Linked to Cat Parasite

A recent study from Schizophrenia Research, according to CBS News, has found a link between mental disorders like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia and a feline parasite known as Toxoplasma gondii. Researchers concluded that exposure to cats in childhood could pose as a risk factor for future mental illness. In a subsequent study from the Academic Medical Center of Amsterdam, researchers confirmed this association between T. gondii and mental illnesses after results demonstrated that individuals exposed to the bacteria were twice as likely to develop schizophrenia in addition to confirming results multiple other studies.
