Rotavirus Vaccine May Cause Bowel Obstruction in Infants

Bloomberg News reports that two studies, conducted by the FDA and the CDC, respectively, have found that Merck’s RotaTeq and GlaxoSmithKline’s Rotarix may cause bowel blockage in infants who receive the vaccine to prevent diarrhea. In the FDA study, 1.5 out of 100,000 recipients of the vaccine presented with intussusception, a bowel disorder that may require surgery. The CDC study found 5 cases in 100,000 given Glaxo’s Rotarix. However, professionals say that these risks are still minimal and the CDC is urging that infants continue to receive the Rotavirus vaccine to prevent severe diarrhea.
