Researchers Turn Smart Phone into Biosensor

The Associated Press reports that a new app and cradle can “turn your smartphone into a handheld biosensor.” Developers say their stand/application combination can be an asset to doctors by eliminating the inconvenience of having blood drawn at separate facilities and sending it to laboratories. The biosensor uses a series of lenses and filters that mimic those found in expensive laboratory biosensors. Developers say it can “detect toxins and bacteria, spot water contamination and identify allergens in food.”
