Researchers Find Amphetamine-like Compound in Dietary Supplements

USA Today reports on a report published in Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis that has identified 9 dietary supplements that may contain an amphetamine-like compound. The study analyzed 21 “supposedly all-natural supplements” that contain the compound Acacia rigidula, which “seems to have never been tested on humans.” The supplements are marketed for things such as weight-loss, energy boosting, or mood stabilizing. Researchers are expressing dismay that the FDA hasn’t issued any warnings to the public about the supplements and that they are not moving fast enough to “remove hazardous products” from the market. The president of Hi-Tech, the producer of many of the supplements, claims that the compound is “all-natural” and that he has never witnessed any adverse outcomes from the compound.
