PTSD May Bring Along Trouble in the Bedroom

According to Reuters, a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine suggests that both men and women suffering from PTSD may experience sexual dysfunction as well as relationship difficulties. Sexual dysfunction has commonly been linked to one’s exposure to rape or sexual trauma rather than PTSD, but this research suggests that in PTSD the brain connects the sensation of arousal to aggression instead of healthy sex. Additionally, PTSD sufferers may experience a loss of sexual desire in connection with depression or other mental health disorders, as depression and the medications used to treat it are also known to contribute to sexual dysfunction. If someone with PTSD is receiving medications for treatment, it pays to monitor what is being given to determine what changes can be made to minimize sexual side effects.
