The recent PLCO study and its results have sparked controversy in some circles. The trial concludes that routine PSA exams and digital rectal exams, standard screening exams for prostate cancer, may not necessarily save the lives of men over the age of 50. As discussed by Janna Andrews, MD, the results of the trial showed that the mortality rate for men from prostate cancer was the same whether they were part of an organized, routine system of screening or an opportunistic system that targets those most likely to need an exam.
