Obesity Strikes Again: Overweight Osteoarthritis Patients Have More Pain

People who are overweight and obese with arthritis report more pain that individuals who are thinner with the same joint condition, Reuters article reports. The study, published in Rheumatology, shows that heavier people are more likely to develop osteoarthritis, and to experience more severe symptoms than more slim individuals. The study also found that osteoarthritis patients with a higher BMI had more pain than those with a lower BMI, despite the same joint damage between the two groups. Researchers attribute the added pain to excess weight on the joints, and certain hormones associated with obesity.
