Not All Doctors Explain All the Risks Involved in Common Heart Procedures

According to Reuters, a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine has found that patients debating whether to undergo a procedure to unblock clogged arteries may not be receiving enough information from their doctors to make a well-informed decision. The authors analyzed 59 recorded conversations between cardiologists and patients regarding balloon angioplasty and found that only two of these discussions covered all the information needed for a patient to make the best choice. Alternative treatments were only discussed 25 percent of the time and doctors were even less likely than that to confirm whether patients understood all the information or to explain the pros and cons of different stents that can be used in the procedure. It is important for physicians to ensure that the patient is aware of all factors and possible outcomes of a procedure in order to provide the best care possible.
