NIH Sets Budget at $4.5 Billion for Brain Initiative Project

The National Institutes of Health is taking its next step in the BRAIN Initiative project, putting a proposed $4.5 billion towards the goal of understanding human and animal brains, an article in The New York Times reports. In understanding the brain, experts hope to advance towards more effective treatments for conditions affecting the brain. Initially, the project only called for a $114 million grant for the 2014 year, but the new budget will increase commitment towards the research, and according to Columbia University’s director of Brain Science, Dr. Eric R. Kandel, “is a realistic amount of money.”
