New Gene Therapy Offers All-Natural Pacemaker

Until now, electronic pacemakers have been the primary solution to cardiac arrhythmia, but a new and improved therapy may be in sight, Reuters article reports. In a study on pigs with a condition called heart block, researchers injected a human gene into the heart’s chambers, reprogramming the heart muscle cells to stimulate a healthy and regular beat. After seeing success in the trial on pigs, researchers will continue to test on animals, and with additional success, hope to use the same technology to treat people who are unfit for pacemaker implantation, such as patients with infection, or fetuses in the womb with congenital heart block.
