New CDC Guidelines on Circumcision Benefits

The CDC released new guidelines on circumcision, stating that its benefits outweigh the risks, CBS News reports. According to the draft, removal of the foreskin can reduce the risk for sexually-transmitted diseases, penile cancer and urinary tract infections. Many state Medicaid programs have discontinued coverage of newborn circumcisions, which cost about $150-$200, however recent research continues to show that circumcision reduces the risk of contracting HIV from a female partner by as much as 60 percent, and certain strains of HPV by at least 30 percent.
