Mysterious Polio-Like Vaccine Outbreak in California

While we are now protected against the polio virus due to the discovery of the Salk vaccine in 1954, an outbreak of a mysterious polio-like virus has manifested itself in California, USA Today reports. The new virus is suspected to be an enterovirus, which is part of “a family of viruses that includes polio but also the milder hand, foot and mouth disease, common in infants and children.” Children lose the ability to move their arms and legs and leading to “muscles atrophy” and the limb shriveling. While the virus is rare, experts are trying to spread the word of its symptoms among neurologists in order to catch more cases and provide treatment.
