The FDA has approved the first clinical studies on human subjects to determine “whether treatment with metformin will restore the gene expression profile of older adults with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) to that of young healthy subjects.” This inexpensive and widely available diabetes therapy has proven benefits on glucose metabolism, but recent research has yielded data suggesting that metformin may be extending the lifespans of mice. The trials will focus on men and women over the age of 60.
