Replacing a diseased valve with the CoreValve system resulted in the death of 11.4 percent of high-risk patients within one year, compared to 21.8 percent of high-risk patients who had a valve replaced surgically. The Medtronic device exhibited vital clinical advantages such as faster recovery compared to the surgical procedure and offering clinicians an option other than invasive and risky open heart surgery.
