Medical Reform? How About Longer Office Hours

Amidst the growing skepticism and discontent of doctors facing medical practice reform, a new study in The Annals of Family Medicine assesses the effect of access to extended office hours on both health care expenditures and mortality. The study found “total expenditures were 10.4% lower among patients reporting access to extended hours… an association related to lower prescription drug and office visit–related (eg, testing) expenditures, without adverse effects on mortality.”
