Junk Food May Not Only Make You Fat, But Also Make You Lazy

CBS News reports that though many believe that people become fat because they are lazy, it may be that people become lazy because of unhealthy eating habits. In a study published in Physiology and Behavior, researchers divided rats into two groups where one group was fed a diet of “unrefined rodent chow,” filled with processed food similar to our junk food, and the other a low-fat, healthy diet. When researchers tested the rats’ motivated behavior with a level pressing tests, they found that the rats on the junk food diet were significantly slower to respond. Additionally, when the diets were switched, the behaviors did not change, suggesting “junk food chemically changes the brain” leading to lasting consequences.
