International Committee Seeks Solution to Fake and Substandard Medicine

Global health authorities have recognized the growing issue of substandard and falsified medicines that have led to untold numbers of deaths. A new piece from British Medical Journal reports a proposal made by delegates of the World Health Organization that seeks to improve safeguards for the quality of genuine medicine and criminalize falsified medicine. “Controversy over intellectual property rights and confusion over terms” has hindered progress, yet the delegation has established the need for clearer definitions of illegitimate drugs and greater surveillance.
