Gupta Reverses Medical Marijuana Stance, Apologizes

In a post for CNN, neurosurgeon and broadcast journalist Sanjay Gupta announced a reversal on his previously outspoken criticism of medical marijuana, and apologized for his role in “terribly and systematically” misleading the American public about the drug. Gupta wrote that he “didn’t look hard enough, until now. [He] didn’t look far enough. [He] didn’t review papers from smaller labs in other countries doing some remarkable research, and [he] was too dismissive of the loud chorus of legitimate patients whose symptoms improved on cannabis.” Gupta also said he “mistakenly believed the Drug Enforcement Agency listed marijuana as a schedule 1 substance because of sound scientific proof,” but has since come to realize that “not because of sound science, but because of its absence, marijuana was classified as a schedule 1 substance.”
