Inflammation May Explain Why Some Obese People Are Metabolically Healthy

The Huffington Post reports on a study in Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism that has identified a gene that may serve as the link between obesity and the likelihood of develop diabetes, heart disease, and other obesity-related diseases. Researchers observed that not all people who are obese actually developing these diseases and that some obese people are actually metabolically healthy, meaning their white blood cell counts are normal. Scientists found that being metabolically healthy is related not to body weight, but to inflammatory markers, and that individuals with favorable inflammatory status, both obese and non-obese, were metabolically healthy.
